Could you be overweight because of an enzyme deficiency? There is a growing debate about the connection between obesity and a lack of digestive enzymes.

Digestive enzymes break down proteins, fats, carbohydrates and fiber in the foods we eat. Enzymes turn the food we eat into energy and unlock this energy for our bodies to use. Every bodily function depends on enzymatic reactions including how our metabolism functions.

The theory goes that if we are not eating the right foods in the right amounts, our bodies are not producing the right enzymes to digest our foods properly. If we’re not digesting properly, the bodily functions that control how we store and burn fat are affected.

If you are eating large amounts of processed foods that don’t contain the enzymes you need for proper digestion, you get into imbalances that can cause health problems such as diabetes, a common health problem for people who suffer from obesity.

If you believe in this connection between enzymes and being overweight, don’t think that you can just pop an enzyme supplement and make it all better. Changing what and how much you eat is a better way to restore balance to your body.

Many health experts that are knowledgeable about enzymes recommend a raw food diet to bring your digestive enzymes back into balance. Don’t worry, a “raw food diet” sounds extreme but it’s really easy to implement this into your life and you may already be doing it.

Eating a salad every day is, in effect, practicing a raw food diet.

Personally, I don’t care for salads but I’ve learned to enjoy them more by using a variety of ingredients that add taste and texture by adding lettuces like sweet butter to the mix as well as a topping of alfalfa sprouts. A tablespoon of Feta and raisins along with balsamic vinaigrette adds a nice sweetness that makes eating salads a much more pleasurable experience.

Just keep in mind that every time you eat a piece of fruit or munch on a piece of broccoli from a vegetable platter, you are eating “raw food”.

Once you start eating more raw foods, you might want to also think about adding an enzyme supplement because years of eating processed foods has surely taken its toll on your health. A digestive enzyme supplement may help restore your body’s enzyme balance faster and speed up the process of returning your body’s functions back to normal. Losing weight would just be a by-product of healthier eating and living.
