Are You Overweight Because of an Enzyme Deficiency?

Could you be overweight because of an enzyme deficiency? There is a growing debate about the connection between obesity and a lack of digestive enzymes.

Digestive enzymes break down proteins, fats, carbohydrates and fiber in the foods we eat. Enzymes turn the food we eat into energy and unlock this energy for our bodies to use. Every bodily function depends on enzymatic reactions including how our metabolism functions. Read more

Benefits of Organic Food

What are the benefits of organic food? Can eating organic food help you lose weight? Is it really more nutritious? What exactly does it mean when a food is labeled “organic”?

For Crops

When a food is labeled “certified organic”, it means that it passes governement standards for foods that are

  1. grown without chemicals
  2. processed without additives
  3. no irradiation, biotechnology or sewer sludge

For Animals

  1. All of the above
  2. Reared without antibiotics or growth hormones

More and more, the scientific community is finding that organic food is healthier for you.

Risks of Eating Organic Food

But if contamination can harm the conventionally-farmed foods we eat, then there’s always the risk that it can happen to organic foods, too. It all depends on the farmer who’s taking care of the crops.

Organic farmers have to control the pests that come with crops. They rely on natural forms of pest control like microorganisms that come in and eat the pests and keep them under control.

They believe that healthy soil that’s free of pesticides and additives will provide the plants with whatever they need to grow and a natural defense mechanism from pests and harsh weather. But there is a health danger if they don’t balance the beneficial pests properly.

Another risk is that some organic farmers don’t properly harvest organic produce and this can sometimes cause food borne illnesses to happen.

Organic Foods – More Nutritious? Tastier?

People who believe in the benefits of organic food say that yes, it does taste better and is more nutritious. There was a study done in 2001 saying that organic apples tasted better than the conventionally grown apples.

In my personal experience, I buy organic milk for my family and everyone agrees that it tastes much better; like it was “straight from the cow”.

I also heard that hormones in milk can sometimes cause problems for developing girls so I feel good knowing my daughters are not being exposed to harmful hormones.

One thing I noticed after buying organic salad greens is that they last longer. I don’t understand how that can be right since it should be preservative free but maybe there is something else being added to the conventional salad greens that is causing it to go bad faster.

Can Organic Foods Help Me Lose Weight?

Whenever you eat a good diet rich in fruits and vegetables, you will have a better chance of losing weight. But you don’t necessarily have to buy organic fruits and vegetables to lose weight.

In my opinion, the benefits of organic foods outweigh the risks especially if you buy from an organic farmer or supermarket that you trust.

How to Build Stamina

Want to know how to build stamina? Maybe you’re just starting a fitness program or you’re returning to your  fitness program after a long illness or surgery. Whatever the reason, here are some tips to get you back on your fitness track.

The definition of stamina – the ability to endure prolonged physical or mental strain. There are a few things you can do first to make sure you have a good foundation.

First, just like a car needs gas in it to make it run, you need good food to give you the vitality you need to have stamina and endurance.

Eat three healthy meals throughout the day and a mini-meal of 200-300 calories about 60-90 minutes before exercising to give you the energy to “go”! If you exercise on an empty stomach, it can cause dizziness and fatigue which is exactly what you don’t want to do if you’re trying to build stamina.

Good choices for the mini-meal are low fat yogurt and a banana, string cheese and an apple or peanut butter (no trans fat) and crackers. If you don’t have time for that, even a small snack 30 minutes before you exercise can help. A simple carbohydrate is your best bet such as jello or a piece of fruit. Read more

Whole Food Vitamins Better than Food?

When I was younger, I thought that whole food vitamins were for hippies. Come to think of it, I’m not sure we had whole food vitamins back then.

It used to be that you could count on regular food…meat and potatoes, vegetables and dairy, to supply all the nutrition you needed to be healthy.

Unfortunately, things change and I’ve discovered that the world’s food supply today has never been more deficient in nutrition simply because we’re not taking proper care of our natural resources and we’re relying too much on manufactured nutrition. Read more
