It seems like my whole life of dieting, I’ve been struggling with emotional eating. No matter what program I am on or what my level of success has been, eating for emotional reasons has been the one thing that has stopped me from reaching my goals.

Sometimes, the emotions that make me eat aren’t even that bad yet I still eat. I think part of the problem is that I equate eating with every emotion, good or bad.

When I celebrate, I look for good food to celebrate with.

When I’m sad, the food provides comfort.

No matter what emotion I’m feeling, there’s a food that goes along with it.

The diet programs I’m on all have pop psychology that they share which is supposed to help you overcome emotional eating but it’s never been very successful for me. Stuff like “find other ways to celebrate that don’t involve food, like having a pedicure.” Uh, what? I’m not sure that a pedicure is an adequate substitute for brownies. Oh, wait. I can say with all certainty that it’s not an adequate substitute for brownies.

So I’m on a search for the cure for emotional eating for me. Maybe what I find can be helpful to you so I will share what I learn.

In the meantime, where’s my favorite brownie pan?
