Stress Relief Tips
Feeling stressed about the holidays? You can reduce your stress naturally by following a balanced diet that strengthens your immune system.
When our immune system is out of balance, we are more vulnerable to everyday stresses and tension. However, if our daily diet consists of foods that strengthen the immune system, we are more able to survive the effects of stress and tension we face on a daily basis.
During the holidays, we are more prone to catching colds and other diseases because of all the extra stress we’re exposed to.
A natural stress relief technique is to balance your diet with foods that contain the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to keep your immune system healthy.
What does having a balanced diet really mean? Remember your mom telling you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? She was right. When we don’t eat a healthy breakfast, we tend to eat whatever we find at the local coffee shop. Usually it’s not very healthy.
What you can do instead is to take a few extra minutes every morning to have a bowl of oatmeal with a glass of water for breakfast. Instead of that cup of coffee, drink some chamomile tea, which has ingredients that will relieve your stress.
A vegetable or fruit smoothie is a nourishing breakfast if you’re short on time. It’s packed with vitamins and nutrients which is much better for you than coffee and toast.
Sugar contributes to stress. Have you ever “crashed” after eating a sugary snack or a bar of chocolate? While the sugar may give you a short burst of energy, it’s not a long-lasting energy source.
A better alternative is to snack on protein. It’s much healthier for you and helps to maintain blood sugar levels as well. Some good choices include natural peanut butter (no trans fat) and an apple or low fat yogurt with fruit.
It’s a good idea to avoid salt since it can increase blood pressure which isn’t a good mix when you’re in a stressful situation. Foods such as hot dogs, popcorn and deli meats have a high salt content.
Another tip is to stay away from fatty foods. Choose vegetables, fruits, lean meats, fish, chicken, beans, and leafy green vegetables instead. These are not only healthier for you, but contain antioxidants that reduce free radicals in your body. For example, you can choose turkey burgers which are much leaner than regular beef burgers.
A natural stress relief technique, like eating a balanced diet, can keep your immune system strong so that when those stressful situations happen, especially during the holidays, your body is better equipped to handle it. You will not only feel good, but your energy level will be constant and productivity will increase.
