Women can fight belly fat effectively with a good strength-training program, a recent National Institutes of Health study revealed. The study focused on intra-abdominal fat, the kind that wraps itself around your internal organs and is almost impossible to lose for many women, especially as they age. It's also dangerous, since an "apple-shaped-body" is a risk factor for heart disease in women.
The study involved 164 overweight and obese women between the ages of 24-44. They were divided into 2 groups: one group took part in a 2 year weight training program and the other group was simply given advice to exercise for 30 minutes to an hour a day for most of the days of the week. Both groups were told not to change their diet in a way that would cause them to lose weight.
The group that went into the weight training program showed only a 7 per cent increase in intra-abdominal fat. The group that was given exercise advice showed a 21 percent increase.
The strength-training group also showed a decrease in body fat of almost 4 percent while the fitness advice group stayed the same.
The lead author of the study, Kathryn Schmitz, said that the women in the study were in a supervised strength-training program for 16 weeks and it focused on chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps, lower back, buttocks and thighs. (Itís interesting to note that the abdominal area was not included in this list.) She commented that this was not a program that you could do in your home unless you had a full gym in your house.
However, you could have the services of a professional personal trainer to lead you in an effective weight-training program that helps you fight belly fat and body fat.
