Thinking about a home business for moms?

If you're thinking about starting a home business for moms that involves direct selling products to your friends and family, here's a checklist to help you make the right decision.

A home business for moms checklist: Is it right for you?

Do you really, really, really, like the products? Every home business for moms should be based on a product that you believe in and use yourself. Are they high-quality? Would you be proud to be selling them? The passion for your products is what's going to get you through the tough times.

Are you a naturally gregarious person who makes friends easily and can talk to anyone? Then you could probably be successful in direct sales. Sooner or later, you will run out of friends and family to buy your products and have parties for you. At this point, you will have to rely on a naturally outgoing personality to help you talk to people about your product and get them to buy it or have a party for you.

Are you bothered by rejection? If you are, you would probably not be a success at this kind of work. You will get 10 "no"'s before you get one "yes".

Do you like odd work hours and locations? Most "parties" for direct sales marketing products take place at night at other people's homes. Time-consuming and sweat-producing. The upside is that you can take care of your business bookkeeping and ordering needs from your home.

Do you mind being a delivery service? Sometimes you have to deliver the products to your hostess while other companies send it directly to the hostess (which is nice...less work for you). Obviously, this can cost you money and time so don't forget to plan for it.

Do you like attending meetings? Most companies have regular meetings to introduce you to new products, new company plans, and to encourage and reward people in their organization. Personally, I always liked meetings because I always needed encouragement but some people may not have time for that.

Is your "upline" local? Be very careful of signing up for a home business for moms with someone who is not in your local area if you intend to build a "downline". It's hard to recruit by yourself without upline support. You will lack credibility and it's an uphill climb. You can do it but why do it the hard way?

What's the market for your product? Is it a luxury item or a consumable? What is the "cost versus benefit"? If you are trying to sell an expensive luxury item in a bad economy, people won't buy it no matter how pretty it is.

What part of the country do you live in? There are some parts of the country...like Florida, where I live...where people just don't have time to go to home parties. There's too much to do outside.

Make sure you understand everything about your home business for moms opportunity before signing...and make sure you can get out of it if you change your mind. Most reputable companies have some kind of 100% guarantee program.

The Ebay effect. Lots of direct sales distributors are using ebay as a way to sell their products at a price somewhere between retail and their discount, in spite of companies telling people that they can't do that. There's nothing more frustrating than selling an item to someone and then have them turn around and buy it again...from someone on Ebay! Think twice before signing up if you see lots of that kind of activity on ebay involving the product you are thinking of selling.
